Copyright and related right activities in Bangladesh are being governed by the Copyright Act of 2000, which has been updated making it internationally meaningful and consistent with the Berne Convention and TRIPS Agreement
The existing Copyright Act of the country will stimulate authors or creators of copyrighted works or materials by effectively
protecting unauthorised uses, which are generally caused in the forms of piracy, bootlegging and counterfeiting, etc.
Literary, musical, dramatic or artistic works, cinematographic works, sound recordings, broadcasts, computer software, video-films and performers’ performances (computer programs come within the definition of literary works and video films
come within the definition of cinematographic films), and published editions of literary or artistic works.
Copyright piracy: Bangladesh believes that piracy is an impediment in the way of development of education, science and culture and it not only deters creative activities of a nation but also discourages the growth of publishing industries and investment thereof, relating to books, music, film, art and sound recordings, etc., which are based on the protection of copyright and related rights and are essentially needed for the purpose of promotion of culture and education.
For knowing use of an infringing copy of a computer program the imprisonment is three years and not less than three months or with fine which may extend to taka two lakhs and shall not be less than fifty thousand
